Nigeria's Falconets have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday.
The result in Bielsko-Biała extended Nigeria's impressive resurgence at the tournament, as the Falconets followed their emphatic 10-1 victory over New Caledonia with another convincing display against one of Europe's representatives.
Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria an early advantage, finding the breakthrough in the opening stages of the encounter. The early goal provided the Falconets with the platform to settle into the game and dictate the tempo.
England were handed an opportunity to respond before the break when they were awarded a penalty, but goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma stood between the Young Lionesses and an equaliser. Uzoma produced an important save to preserve Nigeria's lead and ensure the Falconets went into the interval ahead.
Nigeria returned from the break with the same attacking intent. Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei doubled the Falconets' advantage shortly after the restart, putting Nigeria in a commanding position. Mary Mamudu then added a third in the 73rd minute to complete a result that sent Nigeria into the last eight of the competition.
Beyond the three goals, Nigeria's performance was marked by its balance. The Falconets combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline, limiting England's opportunities and keeping a clean sheet in a match that demanded composure.
The victory also continues what has been a remarkable turnaround in Nigeria's campaign. The Falconets began their Group F campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China. With only one point from their opening two matches, Nigeria needed a decisive response in their final group fixture. That response arrived in emphatic fashion.
Nigeria dismantled New Caledonia 10-1, producing their most prolific performance of the tournament and securing their passage into the knockout rounds. The victory was more than a change in their goal difference— it provided a glimpse of the attacking threat that had been absent from their opening two matches.
Against England, however, the Falconets demonstrated another dimension. There was no need for another goal rush. Instead, Nigeria showed the ability to manage a knockout match, absorb pressure when necessary, and punish their opponents at crucial moments. Three different players found the net, while Uzoma's penalty save proved vital in maintaining the clean sheet.
The result also means the Falconets remain in contention for a deep run at a tournament in which Nigeria have historically been one of Africa's strongest representatives. After a difficult opening to the competition, Nigeria have now scored 13 goals across their last two matches while conceding just one. Their progression has shown a team capable of adapting to different demands as the tournament enters its decisive stage.
From struggling to find the net against Spain and China to putting ten past New Caledonia and three past England, the Falconets have steadily transformed their World Cup campaign. Their quarter-final opponent is confirmed as Colombia, winners of the Poland-Colombia Round of 16 tie, with the fixture set to be played in Łódź.
